About the Maldives 🌴🐠

bucket-list paradise that most only dream about, the Maldives are scattered like jewels across the equator in the heart of the Indian Ocean. These gem-like islands deliver the ultimate vision of tropical bliss—palm-fringed beaches, turquoise lagoons, warm crystal-clear waters, and vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. The Maldives is not just a dream destination; it’s a playground for surfers, offering a stunning variety of world-class waves ready for exploration.

Made up of 1,192 islands across 26 coral atolls, the Maldives stretch 820 kilometres north to south and 120 kilometres east to west, with India and Sri Lanka as their closest neighbours. It’s a place like no other—almost entirely ocean, where the highest point of land sits less than 10 feet above sea level. Picture a vast sea sprinkled with tiny coral islands resting atop an ancient volcanic range. Of these, only 202 islands are inhabited. With no hills, rivers, or significant tides, the Maldives is pure ocean bliss.

Boat Trip vs. Surf Resort 🛥️🏄‍♂️

Whether you choose a boat-based or resort-based surf trip, here’s what matters most: our itineraries, boats, and everything we do are specifically designed for Stand Up Paddle surfers. Onboard, you’ll be among friends who share your passion, with every detail catered to the SUP experience.

Why a Boat Trip Wins Every Time 🚤🌊

  • Freedom and Flexibility: Our boat trips give us unrestricted access to all the best surf breaks, including those that are off-limits to land-based surfers. Chase the swell, avoid the crowds, and explore the Maldives at its finest.
  • Discover More: A boat adventure allows you to see multiple atolls, uninhabited islands, and remote surf spots. Enjoy evenings by a bonfire on a deserted beach with a cold beer in hand after a perfect day of surfing.
  • Seasick? Not Likely! Our yachts are big, stable, and anchored each night in calm, protected waters. Even our most seasickness-prone clients have been pleasantly surprised, experiencing minimal discomfort and leaving eager to embark on another voyage with us.
  • Access to Prime Waves: While we skip the super-crowded North Malé Atoll, we’ll hit some great waves in South Malé before heading to the Southern Central Atolls. With plenty of fuel, we have the range to cruise as far as Laamu Atoll on a 10-night charter or Meemu Atoll on a 7-night trip—guaranteeing the best waves based on the day’s conditions.

Limitations of Land-Based Surf Resorts 🏝️

Surf resorts are limited by location. For everything to align—wind, swell, and tides—luck needs to be on your side. Most resorts offer just one “private” wave, and access to other waves requires a speedboat or Dhoni trip, often with up to 30 surfers on that same break. It’s a different game, with far less freedom to chase the best surf.

Non-Surfing Partners Are Welcome! ❤️🍹

Whether you’re travelling solo, with friends, family, or a partner, our tours are designed to entertain and pamper non-surfers while you’re off catching the waves of your life.

What’s not to love about cruising the Maldives on a luxury motor yacht? Picture yourself on the rooftop deck, soaking up the sun, with a cocktail in one hand and a book in the other. Too chill? No worries—we’ve got plenty to keep you busy:

  • PADI Dive Guide onboard (qualified divers only)🐠🤿
  • Inflatable paddleboards for lagoon exploration 🌊
  • Cooking classes with our onboard chef 👨‍🍳
  • Yoga mats and snorkel gear for ultimate relaxation 🧘‍♀️🐟
  • Fishing, island hopping, and cultural interactions with locals 🏝️🎣
  • In-room TVs, WIFI, and a library for your downtime 📚
  • Beach clean-ups and sunset photography excursions 📸🌅

No matter what you choose, every moment onboard is an experience to remember. Our tours are about more than surfing—they’re about adventure, connection, and relaxation in one of the most breathtaking destinations on the planet.

Join us and experience the Maldives like never before!

Waves and Seasons in the Maldives 🌊🏄‍♂️

Surfing in the Maldives has exploded in popularity in recent years, drawing surfers from around the world. The same powerful swells that light up Indonesia also make their way to the Maldives, though the waves here tend to be a bit more mellow due to the higher latitude and SE exposure. The Maldives is rapidly becoming a surfing hot spot, but with the right knowledge and guidance, you can still find yourself surfing empty lineups with just you and your mates—a rare and unforgettable experience.

The Three Main Surf Zones

1. North and South Malé Atoll

  • Surf Season: April to October (South-West Monsoons)
  • Prime Swell Window: May to August (2 to 8 ft waves)

The North Malé Atoll is the busiest surf zone in the Maldives. With a rise in land-based hostels and resorts catering to surfers, along with many boat charters focusing on this region, it’s not unusual to find 50 or more surfers on a single wave. North Malé is ideal for budget-conscious travellers and swell chasers alike. When the swell is small, North Malé can still deliver, acting as a swell magnet. But when the swell cranks, North Malé transforms into a playground of deep barrels and intense reef breaks, with heavy hold-downs that demand respect.

South Malé offers a quieter option as you journey further south, with fewer crowds but still great waves to explore.

2. Central and Southern Central Atolls

  • Best Time to Surf: April to October (Southern Hemisphere winter)
  • Wave Size: 2 to 8 ft

This is our primary playground, where we focus most of our time. The waves in the Central and Southern Central Atolls are clean, long, and incredibly consistent. Throughout the southern winter, it’s rarely flat, with endless waves breaking across all wind and swell directions.

We can’t reveal the exact wave names here, but trust us—this region is loaded with gems. The key to scoring these waves is boat access. With many of these breaks only reachable by water, you’ll often find yourself surfing empty lineups, a dream for any SUP enthusiast.

3. Deep South / Southern Atolls

  • Best Time to Surf: February to April and September to November
  • Waves: Always present, but fewer options for SUP

The Southern Atolls at the very bottom of the Maldives offer a more remote surf experience, though they come with challenges. While waves are present year-round, the winds can get strong outside of the prime windows. For SUP surfers, getting to these atolls isn’t easy, as local flights don’t accommodate SUP boards, and the wave conditions aren’t ideal for paddle surfing.

But no worries—there’s no need to venture that far south! The Central Atolls offer more SUP-friendly waves, along with plenty of variety to keep you stoked for the entire trip.

Why Surf the Maldives with Us?

With our in-depth knowledge of the region and boat-based access to the best waves across multiple atolls, we’ll ensure you score the best conditions possible. Forget about battling crowds. Our focus is on finding clean, uncrowded lineups tailored for SUP surfers. Whether you’re chasing long rides, perfect peelers, or exploring the hidden gems of the Central Atolls, this surf trip will leave you with memories for a lifetime.

The Maldives isn’t just about world-class waves. It’s about freedom, adventure, and connection to the ocean.

7 Nights – 8 Days vs. 10 Nights – 11 Days

Foil Camp Adventure 🌊🏄‍♂️

Day One – Arrival Day ✈️🚤

Upon your arrival in the Maldives, you’ll be greeted by a representative from Adora or Moon Tours right outside the international arrivals area. If you arrive the day before, there won’t be a representative meeting you, but we’ll guide you on your next steps.

At 10:00 am, we’ll gather at Malé Airport, right in front of Coffee Club / Burger King—it’s a small airport, so we’ll be easy to spot! From there, you’ll board the Adora to begin your adventure.

⚠️ Important: If you can’t arrive before 12:30 pm on Day One, you’ll need to arrive the day before and overnight in Malé or Hulhumalé. You’ll also need to arrange your own transfer to and from the airport, but we’re happy to assist. Check out our FAQs for recommended accommodation options.

Typical 8-Day Tour 🗓️

On this itinerary, we typically explore the Meemu Atoll. if the conditions call for it. This route includes some of our favourite waves—perfect for those on a tighter schedule but still looking for an incredible experience.

Typical 11-Day Tour 🌊

With extra days, we have the chance to venture further south and stay longer at each spot, giving you more time to surf and explore. If the conditions align, we’ll cruise as far as Laamu Atoll, maximising your wave count and delivering the best possible experience.

What to Expect on Your Foil Camp Adventure 🏄‍♀️🚤

Our SUP surf trips start and end in Malé Harbour, close to some of the nation’s most famous waves in the North Malé Atoll. However, since these waves are often crowded with surfers from land-based resorts, hostels, and other charters, we typically avoid this area. Expect names like Jailbreaks, Sultans, Cokes, Ninjas, Honky’s, and private resort waves like Pastor Point.

Instead, we focus on the central and southern central atolls, which offer fuller, uncrowded waves ideal for SUP surfers. These boat-only accessible breaks provide long, clean rides perfect for SUPs, with just the right amount of size to remain rippable on a foil. There are some heavier barrel waves in the region, but our priority is SUP-friendly surf—this trip is all about fun, smooth rides rather than heavy slams.

Flexibility is Key 🌬️⛵

We believe that a surf trip should be fluid—not locked into rigid schedules or distances. Our tours are built to flow with Mother Nature, following the best swell and wind conditions. We stay flexible right up to the last minute, adapting throughout the trip to get you on the best waves.

With a generous fuel and mileage allowance, we have the luxury to travel farther than most standard charters, taking you away from the crowds and into the heart of the best surf spots. Our outstanding boat, experienced crew, local surf guide, and Moon Tours representatives know the region inside out, ensuring an unforgettable experience.

The Last Day – Departure 🛫

Currently, depending on the group, airport transfer is typically scheduled for around 9 a.m., based on the most common departing flight times. Occasionally, we can arrange a later transfer if it suits the majority of flights. If you’d prefer not to take the group transfer, there’s usually the option to stay on the boat for the day (for an additional charge) and arrange a private transfer later.

For safe flight scheduling, any flights departing after 1:00 pm will work perfectly. In some cases, a late checkout of the yacht might be available, giving you a bit more time to soak in the last moments of paradise.

If you’d like to catch an earlier flight, we can arrange a private speedboat transfer. This option costs approximately USD $200. Alternatively, a water taxi may be available for $50, depending on our final night’s location.

Get ready for unparalleled SUP surf adventures, uncrowded waves, and freedom to explore the Maldives like never before. Whether you’re with us for 8 days or 11 days, every moment will be filled with surf, fun, and unforgettable memories! 🌊🍹

Join us for the ultimate Maldives escape—where surfing isn’t required, but fun is guaranteed! 🌞✨

The Maldives is renowned for its pristine beaches and turquoise waters, but it’s the vibrant marine life beneath the surface that truly sets it apart. Known among divers as a hidden gem, the Maldives offers stunning coral reefs and an abundance of marine creatures that make it one of the world’s most sought-after dive destinations. With water temperatures a steady 27°C to 28°C year-round, every dive is comfortable and awe-inspiring. Onboard, our dive masters and instructor provide the opportunity to complete a try dive or full dive course in paradise. Certified divers can enjoy unlimited exploration with the support of a Nitrox-equipped Dhoni, while those who prefer to snorkel can join a guided snorkelling tour led by our expert crew. Snorkelling equipment is provided free of charge, and any diving activities or courses can be conveniently paid for at checkout. Whether you’re diving deep or staying near the surface, the Maldives’ warm waters, incredible marine life, and professional crew ensure every moment in the ocean will be unforgettable. 🌊🐠🌅

Adora Dive Equipment Rates

Fishing has long been the lifeblood of island nations, and the Maldives is no exception—widely regarded as one of the ‘fishiest’ places on the planet. While pelagic species are often the prime targets, the reefs and shallows are teeming with exciting game fish that will test your skills. Expect fierce encounters with Bonefish, Barracuda, Grouper, Snapper, and the king of fish, the Giant Trevally (GT)—for which heavy-duty gear is a must if you plan on hauling these beasts onto the boat.

Cruise the deep blue waters along the outer reefs, where Yellowfin Tuna, Dogtooth Tuna, Dolphin Fish, Wahoo, Sailfish, and Marlin roam. With the freedom to fish from all three boats and the enthusiastic support of our crew, anglers can fully embrace the thrill of fishing these bountiful waters. If you’re serious about your fishing game, bring a solid rod and plenty of your favourite lures—because out here, the big ones are waiting. 🎣🐟🌊

We have a couple of inflatable SUPs available for guests to use free of charge—perfect for a flat-water paddle, some exercise, or just fun off the back of the boat. 🏄‍♂️🌊

Please note: Inflatable SUPs in the Maldives take a beating. With the intense sun and heat, we’ve seen failures across multiple brands. While we aim to have them ready for your use, if they sustain damage and become unusable, it’s unlikely we’ll be able to repair them during the trip. We appreciate your understanding and will do our best to keep them available for as long as possible! ☀️🚤

Inhabited Local Islands 🌴🏃‍♂️

Step ashore and explore the charm of a local island with a relaxing walk or run. Most islands are small and easy to navigate, featuring sandy roads and tracks that can be circled in 20-30 minutes. Be sure to bring a water bottle and a few dollars, just in case you want to grab a snack or souvenir from a local store.

To respect the local Muslim culture, women should dress modestly, covering their shoulders and knees.

Uninhabited Islands 🏝️📚

Enjoy some downtime on a deserted, palm-fringed island, where you can stretch your legs with a beach stroll or run. Lay back in the sand with a good book, or do your part by collecting any plastic bottles that have washed ashore.

There’s no need to bring money here—bikinis and alcoholic beverages are welcome on uninhabited islands. Just remember to stay hydrated and bring a water bottle to keep cool under the tropical sun. ☀️🍹

Movies 🎥🍿

Adora offers fully air-conditioned lounges with large flat-screen TVs, as well as in-room TVs for your personal enjoyment. Each TV is connected to an onboard entertainment system, showcasing a variety of movies and music. We also have a hard drive pre-loaded with movies—but feel free to bring your own USB loaded with your favourites to watch in your cabin.

Books 📚🔄

Our small onboard library offers a selection of books and games to enjoy during your downtime. We also encourage book swaps, so feel free to trade a book you’ve finished for something new.

Games 🎲🃏

There’s always something fun to play on Adora! Our selection includes board games, playing cards, and Moon Tours favourites like Uno and Monopoly Deal. Whether you’re in the mood for a quick game or an epic showdown, there’s always friendly competition to be found on deck.

We’ve got yoga mats onboard that you’re welcome to use anytime. Stretch, bend, and find your flow wherever it feels right, whether it’s soaking up the gentle breeze on the rooftop sundeck (with options for sun or shade) or in the comfort of the air-conditioned lounge or your cabin.

Take a moment to relax, recharge, and connect, the perfect way to balance out all the excitement on your Maldives adventure. 🌊🌞

Our chef invites you into the kitchen for a hands-on experience learning how to create delicious local Maldivian dishes. Get ready to master fragrant curriessoft roti bread, and the art of fresh fish preparation.

Discover the secrets behind Maldivian spice blends that will have your taste buds dancing and bring a piece of the Maldives back to your kitchen. This is more than just a class; it’s a flavour-packed experience you won’t forget! 🌶️🥘

Bring your camera—because in the Maldives, it’s nearly impossible to take a bad photo. Whether you’re snapping turquoise waters, palm-fringed islands, vibrant sunsets, or capturing the bright culture and friendly locals, you’ll find endless inspiration to keep you engaged for hours.

Beneath the surface, marine life bursts with colour and variety, making underwater photography a must.

For adventurous photographers, surf and action shots offer another challenge. Try capturing surfers from the beach or surf boat, or if you have a waterproof camera and strong swimming skills, jump in and catch those epic in-water angles—the surfers will thank you for it! 🌊🏄‍♂️

Depending on our itinerary, there may be an opportunity to purchase a day pass and enjoy the luxuries of a private resort. Treat yourself to a relaxing massage, lounge by the pool, or savour a romantic private dinner with your partner—pure bliss in paradise. 🌅🍽️💆‍♀️

Resort day passes range from $50 to $200 USD, depending on the resort and what’s included. Availability is subject to our cruising schedule and the resort’s policies at the time.

Take a break from adventure and immerse yourself in ultimate luxury—because you deserve it! 🥂🌴

We love arranging visits to local primary schools or kindergartens, offering a wonderful way to meet the community and immerse yourself in the friendly, happy culture of the Maldives. These visits are often a highlight, providing meaningful connections with teachers and children.

If you’d like to make a donation, the kids and teachers are always grateful for sporting equipment such as tennis rackets, soccer balls, crayons, and pencils.

We encourage guests to buy supplies locally, either from a nearby island or in Malé. Not only does this support local businesses, but it also saves you the hassle of carrying items from home. Small gestures like these go a long way in making a positive impact. 🏀✏️

Dining & Drinks 🍽️☕🍹

The Maldives 🌴✈️🌊

Your trip will come up fast, as it does you will see reminders come through your inbox with your balance becoming due 90 days prior to travel. You have a number of ways to pay the balance.

INTERNATIONAL BANK TRANSFER

You will find our USD banking details on the invoice. This is an international transaction, please select the sender to pay fees as only the amount received in our account will be applied to the invoice.

AUD bank transfer (Australian residents only $50AUD fee to be added to the transfer amount)

You will find our AUD bank details on the invoice also.

Please use the NAB foreign exchange calculator (link below) to work out how much AUD you need to transfer and then add $50AUD so we can transfer it into our USD account for you. *You may get better rates doing the international transaction yourself but for some, this is simply easier and less hassle.

*The AUD / USD rates fluctuate by the minute, while we endeavour to transfer the AUD funds we receive as soon as possible the rate may have changed in the meantime therefore the rate and amount you send us is not 100% guaranteed to cover the USD amount required. Generally, it’s going to be close but if there is a shortfall we may ask you to make another AUD transfer.

https://www.nab.com.au/personal/travel-and-overseas-banking/foreign-exchange-rates

Wise money transfer. Money transfer services likewise have become more popular and generally offer better rates than regular banks. A number of clients have used this service with good results but you need to do your own research and decide if this type of service are good for you. We can’t advise you on this.

https://wise.com/au/send-money/

Credit or Debit card.

We accept Visa and MasterCard BUT there is a 4.5% merchant fee that can’t be avoided on USD transactions which will be added to the amount being paid.

It is a requirement of Moon Tours that you have private travel insurance which covers cancellations,  emergency medical attention and evacuation, the rest is important but inconsequential compared to the aforementioned if you need it. Moon Tours insurance does not cover you. We recommend you invest in Travel Insurance as soon as you have booked and confirmed your holiday. Brett from Hello World can assist if you chose.

When choosing your cover you might first look at your equipment cover when actually you should be looking at medical cover and emergency medical evacuation. This is the number one thing to consider when booking any travel insurance.

We recommend Cover More if you’re travelling from Australia.

Let us know what you plan to bring.

”If you’re a surfer riding a smaller board or simply love riding your favourite board, we encourage you to bring it! There is no problem bringing your own board and it’s pretty easy travelling with airlines like Singapore, Qatar and Air Asia for example”

If you want to leave your board at home and book one of our SUNOVA SUPs for sole use you can do so for $250USD included in the fee is one minor deck repair. No there will not be a refund if you don’t damage the board but it gives you some piece of mind that we’re fair and reasonable when you book one of our boards.

BOOK A SUP BOARD HERE: https://www.moontours.com.au/product-category/hire-maldives/

This service is for people who don’t want to or can’t travel with their own SUP, we do not offer boards for sole use if you are bringing your own. We generally have some spares on the boat if you break your board beyond ridable (which hasn’t happened yet) or if there is a board available that you would like to demo. Repair terms apply and would be expected you use it once or twice to try, any more than that and you will need to pay the hire rate.

Please check with us to see if we have something suitable available. Our SUPs are on a first come first serve basis and subject to availability. If you chose to book a Moon Tours SUP it is your responsibility to inspect the board prior to use and note any pre-existing damage to your guides and Moon Tours hosts. You are responsible for the equipment loaned to you for the duration of the trip as if it were your own and you will be required to cover any repair costs.

Minimum $50USD for small deck dings, punctures or cracks that can be repaired on the boat without major work.

Rails / major repairs minimum $100USD. Most of the time we can temporarily repair a board on the boat to keep you going but that doesn’t mean it is not a major repair. The board may have to be repaired on land or carried back to Australia or Thailand for repairs in rare circumstances.

Snapped / creased written-off boards (which hasn’t happened yet) will be charged at the current second-hand market rate and you get to keep it as a memento.

Please note that boards can become unavailable at any time due to damage. We will try our best to supplement to the closest available board.

Pack your favorite SUP. It’s easy to travel with boards up to 9’6, with some airlines claiming up to 9’8 and even 10′ – make sure you check with your airline before booking flights.

For easy traveling with multiple SUPs, we use and recommend ‘ Flying Objects SUP roller bags’ they come in a few sizes 8’0, 8’6, 9’0, 9’6. Check with your local SUP shop.

  • Bring your shortboard, mini mal, foil, bodyboard whatever surf craft you like
  • Warm water/tropical wax
  • Leg rope; plus a spare
  • Fins; plus spares
  • Paddle; plus a spare if you have one
  • Fishing, rod lures
  • Comfortable and lightweight clothes for the tropics. Casual dress code, with one or two nice outfits for dinner party nights. Laundry is available on board so you can pack light. On local inhabited islands, it is respectful for all women to cover your shoulders and knees while walking the streets and visiting local establishments.
  • Sun protection UV Rash guards x 2 min – The sun is HOT. We would be very very surprised if anyone needed any kind of wetsuit or neoprene tops while surfing, paddling, swimming, and snorkelling. Should you like a wetsuit for diving we can provide one on the boat with prior notice.
  • Sun / Surf Hat & Sunglasses
  • Drink Bottles. You will be given your own reusable water bottle on board with access to unlimited filtered water and ice. If you have an insulated drink bottle do bring it along.
  • Hydralyte ia great to have in your water bottle while being active in the tropics.
  • Lots of sunscreen; please think ocean-friendly products, like SurfMud which also offers the best protection for your face.
  • Beach towels, bath towel, shampoo & soap are provided. BYO any other personal toiletries and medication. Please think of ocean friendly products when choosing your toiletries.

FROM AUSTRALIA

You have a few options but if it’s Surfboards and Surf SUP’s you want to bring then we recommend flying with Singapore Airlines or Air Asia to Male who have been taking boards up to 9’6 for us and our clients since 2017 without incident.
Singapore Airlines leave regularly from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane – Male via Singapore. Singapore Airlines have a generous standard allowance with up to 30kg / 9’6 max length in economy. Don’t go over the limit though, you can not pre-purchase additional luggage and excess is charged at $42USD per kilo.
Air Asia leave regularly from Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast via Kuala Lumpur.
Air Asia offer pre-purchased additional sporting allowance making it easier to bring multiple boards.

FROM THE UNITED STATES

The easiest way to get to the Maldives is through Dubai on Emirates who take boards up to 300cm / 10′.
Emirates fly regularly from Los Angeles – Dubai – Male, the shortest route takes about 27hrs including stops.

Please see itinerary details for your boats departure/arrival times, you may be required to arrive the day before to align with departure times.

*Remember to double check your airlines luggage allowance, we can not be held responsible for any refusal you may encounter from an airline.

Whether you are arriving the day before your tour or you have a few hours to fill, you can store your boards at the airport in the luggage room upon arrival – $12 a day, we will pick them up when we board the yacht.

WHERE IS THE LUGGAGE
Easy to find, when you walk outside the arrivals doors turn left and you will see the storage office about 100 meters away. Next door to the public toilets.

Almost all Visitors get a 30 days Visa on arrival at no charge. Visitors entering the Republic of Maldives should fulfill the following requirement for the grant of an entry permit into the country. Valid international travel document issued by the Government of a Sovereign State. Return air ticket. Minimum of US$30.00 per person per day or confirmed hotel reservation.

*It is important to double check the Visa requirements of the country you are travelling from and your passport country of origin.

Lightweight clothing is best. Prepare for hot & humid conditions. To respect the Muslim culture women should dress modestly covering shoulders & knees however the airport is very westernized.

If you have time to spare you might like to visit the bustling Male City. Take the local ferry, approx $1US each way or a cab across the new bridge linking the two islands together, approx $10USD each way. The ferry ticket booth is in front of the Coffee Club/Burger King and taxis can be easily accessed at the airport taxi rank.

Alternatively, you can take a 15min bus ride around to Hulhule Male where it is much quieter. There are nice restaurants & cafes along the beach. Note there are no bikinis on this beach.

At the Hulhule Island Hotel by the airport, you can purchase a pool pass (bikini friendly) for a swim, a cold beer and somewhere to relax if need be. There is a frequent free shuttle to the hotel from the front of the airport.

Our tours start and finish at Male, Valena International airport. Unless your tour states otherwise.

If you’d like a hand with flights our flight agent’s details are below. Let Brett know your travelling with Moon Tours and include your tour dates, who you’re travelling with and date of birth if you want a travel insurance quote. He knows what’s up and books most of our client’s flights.

Most guests arrive on the start day, (Singapore Airlines) SQ 11:50 am which aligns well with the boarding time of 1pm, however an overnight to catch up on sleep before the trip starts is good.

On the last day SQ flight at 12:50 works well for departure and we will have everyone back at the airport at 10:30-11 to align with this flight check in.

TRAVELLING FROM THE USA & EUROPE

We have lots of guests that come from the US and Europe.

The are a number of flight options with

Qatar via Doha

Singapore Airlines via Singapore.

Emirates via Dubai

With the long travel times, we suggest arriving the day before so you have some time to catch up on sleep before getting onto the boat and into the surf.

If you are in Australia our travel agent Brett Robinson has looked after our client’s flights for a couple of years now. He knows exactly what you need. You can contact him directly when you are ready to get some flight quotes. Let him know you are traveling with Moon Tours and if he needs any additional information he can contact us as well.

We recommend you arrive the day before to ensure you are on time for departure, you can sleep off any jet lag and unwind a little before jumping into the water for a surf.

Please note Brett can only book Air Asia with an additional fee, the budget carrier is an online direct booking only service.

You definitely don’t need a car, Male and Hulhumale, are very small islands you can walk across in a few minutes. Everything is 15 minutes from the airport. It’s actually worth walking around, to give you some perspective of how the Maldivian ‘city’ folk live and Muslim lifestyles and culture. Rooms are comfortable, but not always quiet, so always travel with ear plugs and an eye mask, is my hot tip. It’ll also make you appreciate the boat more!

Space is a premium on the island, so most rooms are small to standard size, enough for a bed and bathroom. If you want more than that, you have to pay premium prices and/or leave Male for a resort.

I’d look at H-78, I always find them to have the best service, clean modern rooms and most importantly for me, the best breakfast! They have a range of western and local food.

If you want more than that, jump on trip advisor or Bookings.com and have a look at places to suit your needs. They will usually always include airport pick up and drop off.

Tip: if you are travelling with a SUP or surfboard it’s easiest to put it in storage at the airport and grab when we meet back at the airport for boarding the yacht.

See some other accomodation options below.

“Coconut Tree Hulhuvilla” Beach provides a comfortable setting in Hulhule male.
It offers clean simple accommodation with air-conditioned rooms and satellite TV. Recently refurbished you get free Wi-Fi and very basic breakfast. Room service can be ordered from the adjoining hotel. Under different names but the same company, you will need to settle room service bills at the time.

A hotel airport shuttle or taxi can be pre-arranged with reception to and from the airport for $10.

The breakfast is very basic, we recommend walking to a nearby cafe like ‘Family Room’ or ‘Bread Matters’, they both do a lovely breakfast.

NOTE: No alcohol is served here

“Simry Beachside Maldives” is another option which is next door to Coconut Tree.

Simry Beachside Maldives offers 3-star accommodation in Male. It also provides massage services, room service, express check-in and check-out feature.

On-site dining options include a restaurant which is an ideal spot to have a meal within a 10-minute drive of Male International Airport.

NOTE: No alcohol is served here

Please arrive by 12pm midday, if you arrive later than this you will need to arrive the day before and overnight in Male. We plan to board the yacht at 1pm, if everyone is on time we can get on earlier.

We will generally get off the yacht around 10am to be at the airport by 11am. This aligns with SQ flights.

If you need to leave earlier please let us know in advance so we can arrange a private transfer. Please note private transfers are an additional expense.

Non surfers welcomed. Bring your partner, friends and family, there are lots of activities to entertain everyone.

Children 13+ welcome, anyone younger will be considered upon application.

If you have 10+ in your family / group ask about a group discount and the options of a private charter.

Please let us know if you have dietary requirements and especially medical conditions like allergies. Gluten free is not a problem as a lifestyle choice or mild intolerance but if you are diagnosed celiac with severe reactions please let us know so we can make extra allowances.

Every meal served will give you a wide range of choices from light and bright, vegetarian to hot and heavy and carnivore suitable.

We have some 5 non-surfing surfing spots available for partners, family and friends. Non-surfers will enjoy a luxury cruise around the Maldives and can partake in all non-surfing activities such as flat water paddling, plenty of fishing, snorkelling, scuba diving (learn to dive with PADI), island hopping, local island interactions, a luxury resort visit, beautiful food, sunset drinks and music on the sundeck as well as the opportunity to learn how the chefs prepare a mixture of local dishes.

Depending on the tour we do offer daily yoga and pilates classes although some self-guided yoga on the sundeck is a pastime many enjoy regardless.

At the end of the day non surfers can be kept reasonably busy, I think it goes without saying that surfing comes first but we can and do cater for non-surfers all the time. If a non-surfer struggles to relax, likes to run 10 mile a day and needs constant organised or guided activities they may struggle on a cruise.

If you would like to add a non-surfer to your booking please let us know.

  • Cash & Cards: We recommend bringing at least $500 USD in cash and a VISA debit card for settling bills on the boat and withdrawing local currency from ATMs if needed.

  • Tipping: While not mandatory, tipping is a standard part of any boat charter. We cover a small portion in our surf trips to support the crew, but we highly recommend guests contribute at least $150 USD per person to the communal tip box, which is shared among the crew and guides. You can also tip individuals or guides directly, but remember—it takes the whole crew to make this trip an unforgettable experience.

  • Carrying Cash: It’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand, whether it’s USD or local Rufiyaa, as you never know when you might need it.

  • Local Currency (Rufiyaa): If you’re heading to Malé or shopping on local islands, having Rufiyaa will come in handy. The coins make for great souvenirs, though smaller denominations are rarely used.

  • Currency Exchange & ATMs: You can exchange major currencies at the airport forex exchange on arrival or withdraw local currency from ATMs. Any leftover Rufiyaa at the end of the trip can be used to partially settle your account on the boat.

  • Using USD: USD is widely accepted in the Maldives, but not great for small purchases like ice cream at a corner store.

  • Settling Expenses On Board: Bar tabs, dives, and additional expenses on board can be paid by credit card, but this generally incurs a 5% surcharge, which is standard for overseas transactions.

  • Leftover USD Cash: If you return home with leftover USD cash, it’s not a bad thing! You can always convert it back into your home currency at a decent rate, making it a useful travel reserve for your next adventure.

Wifi is included on board in the shared lounge area but it is not great. If you need to be connected for work and require reliable internet you will need to get a local SIM card. There is Dhiraagu and OREEDHOO local teleco stores 20m to the right as you come through the arrival doors.

Approx USD$30 for 20GB, USD$50 50GB which lasts up to 30 days.

The boats and cabins are fitted with UK type G three pin square outlets. There are a few universal outlets on board and generally some universal adapters around the place.

Duty-free alcohol will not be permitted to enter the Maldives, if you do purchase Duty-Free it will be taken off you on arrival and you can pick it up on your flight out.

Legally, if you’re 18 and not a Muslim, you can buy and drink alcohol on licensed boats and resorts. However since the Maldives is an Islamic nation, alcohol is effectively banned for the local population.

The only place near Male, aside from resorts, where people can drink alcohol is at the Hulhule Island Hotel, commonly known as HIH or the airport hotel.

See your doctor for some basic medications; pain relief, antibiotics for coral cuts, gastro-stop / Imodium and Azithromycin (prescription) in the event of severe diarrhea, nausea tablets if you are prone to motion sickness although rare on our tours.

We cap our own surfers at 12, so that everyone can get waves. The Maldives is known for it’s consistency, so the steady waves really keep everyone on rotation.

As for other boats and surfers, we leave the main central atolls asap and head south to quieter, way less crowded surf breaks. We often get breaks to ourselves or as we use one of the best and most respected surf guides from the Maldives, organise sharing the wave into 2 hour time blocks with other boats. That is not always possible, as island resorts and boats bring out surfers with no guide and very little etiquette. I’m always out there enforcing etiquette amongst ourselves and other surfers, but as you know it’s not always possible.
We do as whole have large portions of time to ourselves and as the trip goes, often people choose to sleep in or rest weary bodies, so the seasoned surfer can really get a high volume of waves without being greedy.

Swell size is consistently around 2-4ft, it travels far, so it has good period and energy, so generally not soft crumbly walls, but well shaped waves, prime for whacking and progression. It is not fiji or Indonesia and we don’t chase hollow, critical barrels, that is risky and survival surfing, although I have been barrelled many times and there are some waves that, if we go past will test how well you read waves. Atolls waves notorisly start at a steep peak and wind of down the reef wrapping back towards you, with fast and steeper sections. The inside is usually hollow and fast and I often advise guests to pull off before this section, if not confident.

It does also pull some swell and we’ve had it well over 6ft and plenty enough to get your hear rate up and check your legrope. I’ll attach some photos, but please peruse the website via the link to Jakes trip below. There is also a frequently asked questions tab on each trips page.

Again the Maldives are notoriously consistent, hence it’s a mecca of tropical surfing. It is monsoon season, which brings the swell, so you can get squalls and tropical storms that blow through, but primarily it is glassy to offshore. We wouldn’t go there unless the likely hood of amazing waves, is extremely high, which it is.

We can get in the water up to three times a day, with 2-3 hour windows. This often tests out the hardiest surfer and has most of us reaching for the Ibuprofen and massage gun by day 3. Atolls have tides, but can be surfed through, the only thing that really affects waves is the current at peak tide, can send a chop through the wave. The currents move in and out, but for SUP we can manage it better than surfers and a bit of current often clears out the surfers.

Quarters, Mushrooms, F1’s, rip tides, Mikados, just to name a few.

There most definitely is! the waves only get bigger and better as we leave the central atoll.
